Sleep May Be More Important Than You Think

sleep

If the Jurassic method of counting sheep is not working for you, here are some facts you'll want to sleep on. Chronic sleep deprivation can cause you to be tired. It can significantly affect your health, safety, performance, and lifestyle.

Most people are surprised to learn that sleeping less than six or seven hours a night can increase their mortality risk more than smoking, high blood pressure, or heart disease.

Losing as little together and a half hours of sleep for only one night could end in a discount of daytime alertness by the maximum amount of 32 percent. This loss can impair memory, and therefore, the ability to think and process information effectively.

Decreased alertness also can affect your life by limiting your participation in activities that need sustained attention, like reading a book or watching your favorite television program. And the risk of receiving an occupational injury quite doubles when an individual is sleepy.

Car accidents are another problem. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates conservatively that every year drowsy driving is liable for a minimum of 100,000 automobiles crashed, 71,000 injuries, and 1,550 fatalities.

As many as 70 million Americans have sleep disturbances-which include taking an extended time to urge to sleep, sleeping less, and awakening frequently.

Sleep disturbances may actually be a symbol of a way larger problem, especially if they're related to irritability and mood swings. Emotional stress, racing thoughts, and restlessness are often signs of something more serious, like manic depression.

"If someone is experiencing restlessness and irritability, alongside sadness or emotional ups and downs for quite a fortnight," said Dr. Ellen Frank, professor of psychiatry and psychology, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, "they should seek medical attention from a specialist who is trained to diagnose or perhaps just rule out depression or manic depression ."

The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) has launched a replacement internet site, that offers educational resources and provides screening for sleeplessness, information on when to ascertain a doctor, and a questionnaire to work out when sleeplessness was diagnosed to be a more serious illness.
